Club members from UQ Powerlifting and Weightlifting Club complete in local, state, national, commonwealth and international powerlifting events. Here are some highlights of their achievements

Not many Australian powerlifters have set world records but in 2005 at the Australian Open Powerlifting Championships held in Townsville UQPWC member Sam Lane from Brisbane set a new subjunior world record with a deadlift of 262.5kg (men's 125+kg division). In September 2005, Sam went on to compete in the World Sub-junior and Junior Powerlifting Championships in Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S.A. and placed second with a deadlift of 265kg. Russian lifter Papoyan Yuriy placed first with a deadlift of 275kg.

The subjunior lifters (under 19 years) just keep getting stronger every year. The current world record holder (at February 2010) in the subjunior 125+kg deadlift event is Norwegian Carl Yngvar Cristensen who deadlifted 317.5kg in November 2009 at Sandnes, Norway.

Lifting in the junior age category, Carl Yngvar Cristensen (156.4kg body weight) from Norway deadlifted 330kg (Totalling 980kg and taking 4th place in the men's 125+kg division) IPF World Sub Junior and Junior Powerlifting Championships 2009.

Helen Allen (rear left) was the sole representative from UQPWC to the World Masters Powerlifting championships held in Ostrava, Czech Republic from 28 September to 3 October 2009. Helen won a bronze medal in the squat and bench events and silver in the deadlift claiming silver overall in the 56kg M1 category. The Masters 1 Australian women's team achieved silver overall (to the USA) for team points.

At the 2009 Australian Championships, Brisbane lifter Theo Lagis competed in and won the 60kg class with a new national deadlift record of 240kg (four times his body weight) and total record of 570kg giving him an Elite 1 world qualifying total.

Also competing at the Australian Open Championships, Ray Hope (an Elite 2 lifter) competed in the very competitive 67.5kg class with eight competitors and followed Theo with the national title in this class and a new national total record of 605kg.

Overall the club had four national powerlifting titles for 2009.

Ray Hope competed at the 2010 Qld Open at the Schonell Theatre. He managed to deadlift 250kg - a great effort considering he weighed in at 67.3kg.

In his first National Powerlifting event the 2010 Powerlifting Australia National Championships, Mark Barham from the UQ Powerlifitng and Weightlifting club placed third in the 82.5kg category with squat 245kg, benchpress 172.5kg, deadlift 255kg and total 672.5kg.
